Interview With A Skater ✨ Meet Marawa... Again

Marawa has spent sooo years skating, performing, and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible on wheels. With 12 Guinness World Records and a deep love for hoops and rolling around on 8 wheels, she’s earned her title as skate queen. We caught up with Marawa to talk about the new Red Glitter high-heel skate, skating as a way of life, and the most important lesson of all... read below to find out!

What was your design inspiration and vibe for the skate?

This skate is for the lovers! The showgirls! You can't go past a cherry red - it looks good with everything - Just like a red lipstick :) It's the romantic edition - pink and red - one of my favourite colour combinations and with as much sparkle as possible of course.

What was your inspiration for the shoot?

I have been working on a lot of magic acts the last few years - spending time in Vegas and sifting through the archives of old shows and timeless glamour. I wanted to do something a bit more magic and cabaret-inspired this time. A classy clown. That's what I am trying to channel these days.

How does this collab reflect your personality - the skate and shoot?

Each skate I have designed has been a reflection of what I am really into at that time and things that inspire me - this skate is so delicious to look at and it really feels like the best one yet.

What do you love most about skating?

Just one thing???? That's hard. But I always come back to freedom - the feeling of complete weightlessness when you are on the smoothest of smooth surfaces and feel like your feet are not even on the ground. I live for that feeling.

What does the skate community mean to you?

Family. Family that exists through a shared love of that feeling too! Being back in Australia I have reconnected with skaters I haven't seen in years - but the conversation always just picks up like it was yesterday - I love that.

What inspires you?

music.

What do you want people who buy this skate to feel?

I want them to have that feeling that you get when you have spent that extra bit of time getting ready to go out, used the last of the good hair products, taken time to get the eyeliner right, worn the outfit that you only save for those extra special nights, and then, to top it all off you slip your feet into literally Dorothy’s slippers and you can click your heels and say there's no place like home. Home being the rink obvs ha.

Why do you want to see more women embrace their creativity and skating?

Skating is good for your health, good for your soul, and a great way to express yourself. I cannot endorse it any stronger!!

Any advice for skaters starting out?

Take all the lessons - the real ones - in person. Not to say YouTube tutorials are not good - they are a great starting point - but irl is just way better. you MUST learn to fall - it needs to be the first thing you do - and from there everything is much easier - and safer!

Any advice for those who have thought about it but haven’t started yet?

Go to the rink - watch! Try and borrow skates from a friend in your size - don't be discouraged by rental skates - they can often feel truly awful and put a lot of people off skating! LEARN TO FALL - it's the most important thing to know
